about

In 1967, swedish composer Folke Rabe recorded What??, a minimal electronic piece consisting of a long drone with no variation in pitch and only slight changes in timbre. CEM is two separate covers of this piece, performed on an Oberheim OB-Xa. The OB-Xa is an early polyphonic synthesizer, produced from 1981 to 1983 utilizing a chipset produced by Curtis Electromusic, that was a defining instrument of pop music during that era (used by artists such as Prince, Queen, Van Halen). CEM is an attempt to take a recognizable pop sound and deconstruct it into a textural drone, thus removing any preconceived associations the listener may have and allowing them to thoroughly explore its sonic qualities.

A1 was created using the Brass Ensemble patch, best known from Van Halen's Jump
A3,4 was created using two user-generated patches stacked together in the synthesizer's Double configuration
